Gene Karpinski: Scorecard Highlights Sweeping Assault on Environment and Public Health
On Tuesday, the League of Conservation Voters took the extraordinary step of releasing a Continuing Resolution Special Edition National Environmental Scorecard , revealing member scores for environmental, public health, and energy votes taken on amendments to the House-passed spending bill. For 40 years, the National Environmental Scorecard issued by LCV has been the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental, public health and energy issues. Harvey Wasserman: Obama’s $36 Billion Nuke-Powered Giveaway
Barack Obama’s 2012 budget marks a major escalation in the nuclear war against a green-powered future, whose advocates are already fighting back. Amidst massive budget cuts for social and environmental programs, Obama wants $36 billion in loan guarantees for a reactor industry that cannot secure sufficient private “marketplace” financing for new construction. In the past decade the reactor industry has spent at least $640 million lobbying for these massive advance bailouts. Continue reading →

R. Gil Kerlikowske: The Obama Administration’s Public Health Approach to Drug Policy
President Obama’s comments during last week’s live YouTube interview about the need to approach our national drug problem from a public health perspective were timely, thoughtful, and well-grounded in what science tells us about drug use and its consequences. Like the president, I am opposed to the legalization of illegal drugs. Continue reading →

Liz Butler: Missing From the State of the Union: The Clean Air Act
President Obama has been lavished with?praise?for his focus on competitiveness and clean energy in his State of the Union Address. In the midst of that praise,?however,?I must bring up some clear issues of concern. First, the president has not actually made a concrete promise to protect the Clean Air Act from impending congressional attacks; he has only alluded to it. Continue reading →
